I just wanted to address this issue so you understand some of the limitations put oupon us, and why it isnât as simple as just asking someone to work on the weekend. @Razzagor I know youâve been posting about this left right and centre.
The reality is, even if one of us were to work across a weekend, there isnât much we could do. A few suggestions in other threads were that we have someone who works and monitors things and can contact other developers if anything goes down, or that one of us fulfil this role outside of office hours. This isnât necessary, as I already do so. I am regularly online, and as soon as I see that someone has experienced an issue, I pass the information along to the appropriate members of the team as soon as I am able. Players have a direct line of communication with me, and as soon as something happens I am aware quite quickly.
If someone were to remain in the office to do this, there is little point. I am unable to fix the server issues myself, whether or not I am physically in the office. The same goes for Cyrup or Kafka. Even if one of our programmers were here, they may be unable to fix the issues on their own, and would need assistance from other members of the team. This means that the suggestion that one of us stay in office over the weekend is, unfortunately, not very helpful to either the developers or players.
Another suggestion I saw was that we hire someone part time to only work on the weekends that is also able to fix any issues that occur. This is also unlikely to happen, as any programmer that is able to perform these tasks isnât going to want to work part time on the weekends. Someone that senior would, understandably, be searching for a role that would let them work full time on a healthy salary, and give them weekends off to spend with their friends and family.
On top of all of this, any team member that works across a weekend must be payed overtime or penalty hours accordingly. If there will be no change, it doesnât make sense to pay someone more money to work on the weekend, and the truth is that most people do not want to work on weekends. With most people working through the week in full time jobs, weekends are the best time for our staff to see their friends and family. Developers are people that need rest and downtime in order to work more effectively. That being said, many of our staff do work through the weekends, and I am online to monitor what is happening so I can ping people as necessary. Just because you donât see us in the office, doesnât mean we arenât aware of issues and working behind the scenes to fix things as quickly as possible. This is what happened over the last two weekends with server issues! I let the appropriate personnel know, they worked behind the scenes, and as soon as we were able we had resolved the server issues.
I donât think it is fair to ask us to work across the weekend, but many of us choose to do so anyway. I believe that this speaks to how much we love this game, love this community, and want to fix issues as soon as we are able. I hope this explanation has shed some light onto the truth of the situation on our end.
