Not quite. Think of it like this:
Various gnome types = specialized types that are most likely to drop one resource (but without being limited to that), and that have lower spawn rate.
Treasure gnomes = the generalist type, that can drop every resource at aproximately same rates, and have biggee spawn rate than the specialised ones.
Then most of the variant cousins are pointless
