Does my hero level without it in a team?

I gave a couple teams I don’t use my hero in and was curious about leveling

Yes, hero xp is separate from the hero troop’s participation in a team.

Your profile hero (as in you) does.
Class hero that you use to battle still needs to be leveled up to level 20 with souls.
Also you gain wins towards unlocking hero class weapons even when you dont use your hero in the team.
