Thats a nice post of you efh313 to a new forum user, still I cant wait to see how even that genuine kindness is received.
I think your best course of action is to design the game you want instead of trying to make this one over in your own image. Best of luck with that.
I’ve been messing around in Unity for work, and I think this is great advice. Especially since most of the art assets have been scraped through the efforts of data miners, it would be possible to genuinely design one’s own take on GoW from the base I+2 have provided.
Just don’t, you know, sell it or do anything beyond show it off to a few friends. Fan tributes are cool, copyright infringement is not.
Edit: especially because the OP has written enough by now for several games’ worth of design documents.
I kept scrolling thinking about there was an error with my phone browser. I didn’t read any of it.
DAMN!
lol I literally just said that to someone else just now lol!! and I don’t remember seeing your post (think that was just when I got ‘cut off’ by a mute),
anyways yeah totally right,
kinda sad though cause I feel most people don’t realize Sirrian wanted this game to be something else (based on the Steam trailer, which I checked again after my posts and yeah, lol, it totally leads you to think you’re taking over castle by castle and shows all the different units battling each other (like a ‘polarity versus’ type thing),
anyways whatever I hope they come out with a ‘GoW 2’ or something with those ideas implemented, would be very cool lol
Hey there,
No Joke!!
Yeah interestingly, that’s exactly what I was thinking – use Unity for the programming aspect and do my own art/art assets etc.
I actually wanted to make a ‘match-3’ game as well but with… hmm don’t even want to say for fear of ‘copying’ lol, (half-laughing no joke, lol…),
So yeah my big obstacle (besides the time it takes for me to ‘perfect’ everything in my head) is knowing I have to find a programmer.
I also wondered if the ‘match-3’ was ‘copy-righted’ but after thinking it through don’t think it is, is it? Since there are so many clones using the system.
How much experience do you have with Unity do you think you could ‘code’ a side-scrolling hack and slash game?
Or what about a match-3?
I remember seeing this just before I got muted (lol), yeah I felt bad thinking I might not reply, so honestly I wanted to to make sure you knew what I would say (lol!..)
Thanks yeah I appreciate the welcome -
Yeah, about the ideas, I hear you I think a lot of people should watch the trailer on steam for GoW it really comes off as a ‘kingdom’ battler, like literally going kingdom to kingdom and somehow pitting off your certain ‘army’ against another certain castle, I had that idea aspect from Puzzle Quest 1 (not that you had ‘armies’ in that, but that you went castle to castle), so basically ‘cooked’ those various ideas in my head and realized it would be the coolest thing ever to try to have that…
but alas it become obvious it was a bit too much (at least for now) for the game plus the game didn’t seem to be designed that way at this point, now it’s pretty much ‘get a certain card’ kinda thing more like ‘keeping up with the jones’ lol,
anyways I realized it was a lost cause but hey they were just ideas I threw out maybe the devs might make a GoW 2 that has them in the future!..
(Big Edit!! - Guys!! A lot of this ‘idea’ about ‘kingdom’ battling had to do with having played an old game called " Lords of Magic ", it was an incredible game and one thing that always struck me about it was how cool it was to have a ‘one type’ set of units… It’s kinda simple yet hard to explain at the same time, basically the ‘type’ of unit was a kinda ‘faction’ and ‘magic type’ both at once.
Whereas some games have units based off a ‘list’ anyone can get, and other have like a ‘country’ or race or something, lords of Magic had like a ‘faction based off a Magic type’ thing going… Lol sorry I know I’m getting rambly but basically you have a faction like ‘air’, that has these, well heck, simply put ‘Stormheim’ units, and they were a mix of giants, air units, and ‘air’ magic (yep, Stormheilm is arguably an exact replica of them, check it out for yourself).
It was just really cool to have to select from that ‘type’, and then face the other opposing ‘types’ in combat.
Anyways let me try to find a video to link for the intro gameplay, remember this isn’t trying to ‘change’ this game anymore it’s just kinda showing where those ideas came from, just check them out in positivity nothing more.

Yeah lots of people are confused by me I’m a man of polarities that can throw people off if they assume people are ‘one-dimensional’ lol, and I don’t mean that to sound insulting just you know how it is, if a person ‘looks’ tough they must ‘be’ tough, or if they look like a wimp they must be a wimp etc, but ultimately we all know sooner or later we have to take people as people, multi-faceted and we see them in relation to the circumstance…
Unfortunately I was a bit too enthusiastic about those ideas and I guess I brushed people the wrong way about it…
The learning curve was realizing I should be putting that to better use by making my own games (lol as people themselves ‘joked’ about), it’s very true lol now that I broke free from this game I have an extra 4 hours a day to follow that dream!
(lol no joke and please don’t be insulted by that, : P… lol )
cool let me check my notifications thingy for what’s left before I head off
I don’t think the idea of match-3 is copyrighted. Even if I am wrong, if you are only doing this as an outlet for your own creativity it doesn’t matter. Same with the art assets. Go hog wild and build your own version of a match-3 game that does what you want it to. Just don’t distribute your game to anyone else without consulting a lawyer, and definitely don’t try to sell it. (It is possible that individual elements of GoW may be protected in some way, like the concept of troops dealing damage based on matches. Certainly the game’s code should not be reverse-engineered or disassembled in any way, and the art assets are of course property of I+2 and/or the original artist. I am not a lawyer, and I do not know the state of the field. But as long as you are keeping this for yourself you probably aren’t violating any laws.)
Check this out I appreciate your upfront post,
you know what my idea is?
Lol I love fighters and you know one of the coolest ideas ever would be to have like a ‘gladiatorial’ combat ‘match-3’ type game.
You have a sort of guy, that travels to different arenas, can buy and equip/sell different weapons/armors, and basically have tiered fights with various opponents ina gladiatorial arena setting.
The idea is (mechanics-wise) that simple match-3s (one time) do a simple ‘hit’ right, then if they ‘combo’ (further ‘match-3s’) then they ‘build up’, and (this part is undecided yet) either when the ‘cascade’ finally finishes, then they all’ hit combo style’ the opponent, like a sort of ‘light-show’ but with combos (as in 2-d fighter-style animation combos) obviously, or it could be a sequential hit as per cascade match.
Then we got the match-4s which would be the ‘special hits’, which you could ‘equip’ /buy/train etc, and match 5s which are special ‘critical’ hits.
You would have the graphics in the 'background' but due to large size and sprites would appear 'foreground', much like how they instigated a sort of 'opacity' layer to the board recently in GoW.
Basically instead of armies you have 'one guy' you work on, and it's a personal 'private' style battle (like a street fighter but with medieval gladiators) instead of army based warfare.
Anyways to me it’s all ‘done and ready’ in my head, it’s always (the hard work) about putting forth the effort into building it in reality, the art assets etc.
Any chance something like that might interest you or someone you know?
I’m curious about how tough it would be to find someone to ‘work’ with you on that, without having to divulge the idea about it which would be easily ‘ripped off’ by someone else.
What makes Gems so great is it’s ‘ease of use’ for it’s gameplay, but there are no match-3 games that have that personal ‘combat’ aspect (at least not that I know of), something like this would be ‘revolutionary’ because tons of people love personal ‘one-on-one’ combat and building a guy up, but most are either boring text games or complicated fighting real time action games.
This would be a first to incorporate both aspects in one.
Anyways let me know what you think I’m curious, especially your thoughts on programming something like that and if a ‘entry level programmer’ at a school would be able to help on something like that.
Thanks again for your post I appreciate it
lol yeah that’s just it I would go hog-wild doing all the art, animations, 3d charcters and scenes etc (lol), but it’s the programming I have no idea about and am starting to dip my toes into etc (but honestly I think teamwork is the best option for something like this, it’s tough to gauge if Unity has the ‘pre-code’ built in to allow for easy designing of a game like this or do you need a good coder anyways etc)
looking forward to your advice
I can’t offer any advice beyond what I have. It just sounded like you had lots of ideas, and the best way to deal with those is to channel your energy into implementing them
Could have made 100 levels in the length of time it would take to read this thread.
