When I upgrade a critter using the traitstones some of the traitstones required for the next upgrade vanish. Not the ones consumed - the entire class of stone. Here are before and after pics.
Could somebody explain what’s going on?

It’s adding them up.
In your first picture, the traitstones required for trait 3 are what you need to get all of the traits, so 1 ,2 and 3.
In the second picture, you already have trait 1, so the traitstones required for trait 3 are those you need for trait 2 and 3.
