Not saying only for, it is designed to increase spending amongst new players and those who haven’t spent, and to create a new way of thinking about resource usage. Pets, for example, encourage gem usage by new players who cant complete all 8 battles, just to keep up. Newer players, who are in need of troops, and might not be able to manage full Raid/invasion performance, can spend gems to keep up. They don’t have the kingdom power levels to support the gems needed, nor the fully ascended, leveled, and traited troops to mitigate spending.
The emerging (if not fully developed) picture is that reward to amount of time grinding ratio is being deflated. What’s next? They’ve failed to give me any other reason to spend money on gems since the day almost all of many kingdoms hit power level 7.
Newer players, who do not know about gems in LTs, and never knew the potential gem rewards of playing guild wars every week, look at 1850 gems (needed for tier 7) very differently than someone who remembers a time when gems flowed more freely. How you or i feel about more sinks and less rewards will be different than someone who never knew, and our opinions on the direction of the game matter far less than newer players.
Creating gold sinks that detract from legendary tasks, which produce keys that get gems, further reduces rewards. The new era of gems is looking like a service where even the most developed player will no longer be able to meet the demands of top 10 guild life without spending real money on the most absurdly priced resource in the game…that is, unless the top 10 guilds start electing to skip something.
What I’m really down on is that all signs are pointing to another weeklong event in October/November that will push guild wars to every 4 weeks. If such a new event is coming, and it isn’t a gem-gain, it’ll be the end of the road for some “core players.”
The features might be cool, and even fun to play, but what they mean for the future of the game flies in the face of anyone acting like the money they have already spent means anything.
