Guild Wars, Point-Scoring for Battles, and You!

So you sticking around still @Shiratori

Shhh, don’t make me blush. Working on a revised theory already:

BASE_SCORE * (1 + correctly_colored_troops * statue_bonus) * (1 + 0.1 * surviving_troops) + (MANA_BONUS + DAMAGE_BONUS) / SPEED

Essentially the old formula, just with an efficiency rating added on top. It’s nothing like the formula in the top post, it seems to reflect what we are currently seeing pretty well though. If you win on your first turn, you get 1260 points (due to the efficiency component bugging out). If you play a fast efficient match, you’ll get a few hundred extra points. If you drag it out forever, you’ll get closer to 1260 again.

SPEED might just be actions taken, MANA_BONUS and DAMAGE_BONUS both some scaled ratio of player_value / ai_value. Obviously needs some data to test against. For science.

Do you happen to remember the score? And the number of correctly colored troops?

If I ever go 0-5 in guild wars then that’s it for me, I would uninstall the game and never to return :no_mouth:

So, couldn’t wait for the changes because I was tired of fighting the same 3 teams.

Now we have a scoring system I don’t understand and I still fight the same 3 frustrating teams.

Big failure IMO.

My guild mate has a 0/0 for tomorrow, does that mean he won’t get to play? I have the screen shot if needed. Thx

Used another looper team for brown day. 1 game AI had zero turns again. scored 1470 so they fixed something from yesterday but still feel like I was punished for a perfect game.

Let me just say this in the Devs defense! I posted that we should not hurry the Devs because this might happen! What did you do? You hurried the Devs and now you are back to complaining! I for one am fine with the new system! I like a little mystery to try and figure out! I think they did a nice job in the two weeks we gave them! Would it have been even better if we had not hurried them? Yes! Will it be better later? Yes! Why not stop complaining for once and let the Devs do their job! This is not the finished product and the Devs have stated there will be more changes to come! You just have to be patient!

I would wager my copy of Plague that the formulas were coded with MAX originally, which is why the scores were so unpredictable on Tuesday. Sirrian woke up Wednesday, saw the chaos, and fixed them. That’s why we haven’t seen reports of ridiculous scores today, and scoring in general seems lower.

So this isn’t “oh, we rushed the devs” or anything of the sort. This was a (difficult to spot, given their internal tests rely on AIs) bug, plain and simple.

@Santandrix, it is a known bug. Have seen this happen to members in my guild but they were still able to participate the next day

They could have tested the new GW point formulas using real battle data from a previous week. No client change was needed for new point system, so that means they were already collecting the needed data. Run old data through new formula and check for too high numbers.

Old GW Scoring

  • Knew exactly what the max daily score was (6300)

  • Knew exactly how to achieve that score because it was simple

  • Felt awesome when achieving that score once or twice a week

New GW Scoring

  • Have no clue what the max daily score is

  • Have no clue how to achieve that score because it’s far too complex

  • Feel bittersweet after every match not knowing if I could have done better

I haven’t read through the entire GW change suggestion thread but did many people request a change to scoring mechanics? Can someone please explain to me what the goal was with these changes? It’s so frustrating now and imo less fun which is what gaming is supposed to be about. My first battle today luck was on my side and I won fairly quickly and lost no troops. My score was about 1350 roughly. My next battle luck was against me and I lost 2 troops and the match took way longer. My score (to my great surprise) was still roughly 1250. WTF? Only about 100 points difference between a fantastic game and a game I barely won. What makes it worse is that on my first game I have no clue how I could have possibly played better to get a higher score than 1350. If a battle is almost over and I can win with a skull match but there’s also a 4-match of a color sitting there, do I take the 4-match first or ignore it and end the match with the skulls or with a spell? Who knows? Which choice will get me more points?

Devs please, return us to the old scoring mechanics and instead how about you in the next update implement the changes that the community actually requested. Like only counting the top 27 scores and letting us play our GW battles on any day of the week and adding a bonus for using 24 different defenders. These were the only changes GW needed. This new scoring system is ridiculous and has only resulted in making GW more frustrating.

And I ask again, can someone please explain to me what the goal was with these scoring changes? What are they trying to achieve/fix?

I don’t know where you read this… Some players said that they were missing GW but nothing more hardcore (ie “if GW is not here next week, I will leave the game”).
So only devs decided to put back GW, surely because some players left the game because of the hiatus (you know the 99% of players who not read this forum).

So we agree. They should not put back GW this week but in one or two weeks. And now, we are again beta-testing GoW.

We are not talking about a master student project but a video-game to make dollars so devs can feed their family… If they release something it should a finished product else they do a PTR…
Since 2 years they still don’t have anything like a PTR so the players who want to test the update could do it (via Steam it’s possible for example) without forcing every players to be a beta tester.

I through an absolute fit when they cancelled GW for two weeks, and I hold a grudge against the whiners who got it cancelled.

@Rickygervais still would of burned through his 3000 gems though doc. :joy:

Good luck with pony tomorrow UK.

Complain complain complain! Let’s go forward not back! Everyone has the same rules and I kinda like it myself! I actually have some really cool ideas to make guild wars better and I just thought of them! The old scoring system was kind of boring! Good players will figure out new scoring system and thrive! Complainers will do what they do best and complain!

No one is forcing you to play! Guild wars is optional! Actually playing the game is optional if you want to get down to brass tax!

People were threatening to leave game! I actually posted telling people to simmer down and I said for Devs to take their time and get it right! I said if it takes 6 weeks so be it! Some were saying oh my gosh you can’t get update from console in 2 weeks so bring it back now! I will stomp my feet if you don’t bring it back! When it was down for 1 week people were putting pressure on them by saying is it coming back is it coming back daily!

Note for day 3: my first battle was nearly flawless. I lost some points for speed, but I definitely maxed out every other category. My score? 1458. I assume that the absolute maximum possible score is somewhere around 1600 points, with the maximum practical score closer to 1500. (The absolute maximum assumes that you manage to defeat your enemy with a single action. Even then, you wouldn’t earn “full” points for that section because you still took an action.)

Edit: specifically, I am assuming that each move you save is worth 6 points. If I am wrong (and it’s more), then the maximum is correspondingly higher.

My thing is we still have bugs that you win - get no points for the GW, get PVP points and it counts as a Loss in GW.

There needs to be a way - whatever the math is for points - a way to reset a player who gets screwed over by a bug and is out points period and a loss to boot
