4.9 Update

“Not now, not ever. Never.”
“Don’t you try to manipulate me.”
“Hey, that was pretty good. How does that go again?”
?

I forget how the old Oblivion ‘Win Friends and Influence People’ mini game ended. And then again, with the hemisphere causing the inverse reactions, I’m left with the realization the pancakes will always make me salty.

Off topic: I couldn’t figure out how to make a list item 1 thru 4. Computers are hard. :rage:

Alas, after 100 gold and 100 souls for my time, that ship has sailed for good. :relaxed:

“+50% loot in your next battle” would have broken nothing, and encourage players to look for creative ways to use their bonus without the eternal inflow of RNG frustration that is being increasingly used to stimulate purchases…

…but this is GoW.

The ad rewards were designed by the same person who designed treasure gnomes. Vault Keys are the big reward that keeps you hunting for the gnomes, but to ensure the correct average payout the gnomes often drop just two minor traitstones. Ads dangle a gem key as the big reward to catch your eye, but to ensure the correct average payout you get 100 gold or 100 souls most of the time.

I’ve watched three ads so far, 30 seconds each. 100 gold, 100 gold, and 3 gold keys. You want to bring in revenue from ads? Well, I certainly won’t be watching anymore of them. Complete waste of time. So while you call it fair, you’re also not making any money off these failed ads no one will be watching when they realize how awful the rewards are.

rofl   . 100 gold for 41 secs ad. Seriously ? It’s a joke (to be polite).
Never gonna watch your ads again, pvp matches are faster with more rewards.
What are you gonna do, 505 ? change to lower rewards for pvp or to higher for ads ? I fear your answer …

I think 4.9 is the best update since 3.1 actually. At least this update is honest about the targets the devs and publisher have for the update: Make more money.
With all the updates since 3.1 the money grabs were disguised by adding some new content. This update is honest and doesn’t sugarcoat the money grab.

And let’s be realistic: is anyone here really going to take those silly daily deals. The vast majority here are endgame players, and all the daily deals contain useless resources for endgame players or useful resources at a ridiculous price.

We all just need to accept that this game is a commercial product and that it needs to generate revenue. And then just be smart and not be the ones that generate that revenue ourselves.

I just hope that the next (5.0) update is gameplay related and refreshes the game…

That would be me. Same opinion though, feel free to give an ad watcher more than 100 gold for their effort. I’m sure a gem or two wouldn’t break the economy or provide any significant advantage, it would still be much more appreciated.

I think we need a reality check.

We are now living in a world where we are locked down. We can’t go to work for the most part. We can’t earn a living as well as we did before, for the most part.

Businesses are closed and can’t earn. We are stuck at home. The average person/family is not working, at best furloughed, possibly been made redundant, lost their job, or have no job to go back to, had their world turned upside down by Covid 19. A none normal world. Businesses going bust, no way to sell their products/serve customers, losing revenue, can’t get state grants/funding or any assistance and the immediate future doesn’t look too great.

Yet we have this update, which is basically a grab for more expenditure. It’s so far moved from reality, it’s insulting.

Just take the things in the GOW shop that are so ridiculously priced, still. At this time, I’m sure any sound business would have thought that maintaining such absurd pricing structures would be folly and yet we have the anti covid patch.

The entire pricing structure is completely egregious and even more so at this time. I’m sure you would get a much fairer audience (and more expenditure) if you took a long hard look in the mirror.

As for ads, I watched one. I’ll never watch another.

The rewards ads have taught me that I am AWESOME at slot machines. I win EVERY time. Should … should … should … I go to the casino?

Wait are players forced to watch these ads in order to play the game or is it completely optional? I’m asking because I’m on PS4 and we don’t get ads… I think…

No. They are optional.

Ok so why is everyone complaining about the ads? If they’re not forcing players to watch it then the players don’t gotta watch it. The players can just do their thing and let the developers do theirs.

…because players were excited about ads as a way to support the game. When we watch ads, we are increasing revenue to the game. That’s a good thing. Except we were promised rewards equivalent to a PvP match. In a 30 second PvP match I can get hero XP, class XP, 3000+ gold, maybe some gold keys, souls, 3 trophies…

Watching an ad? I’ve gotten 100 gold twice and 3 gold keys another time. Why would I want to “support” the game for that? No thanks.

Ok, then don’t support it?

You mean like 99,9% of this games population will do? That wtf moment when they watched 40-45 sec and and get 400g and think to themselves wow that was bad it must be broken, I’ll try again for the next one and boom 100g.
A sigh will be heard and the player Will erase the ad function from their brain.

Then we have the 0.1% who invested so much time/money/effort into the game they actually care about what happens to it

We also have me who like to watch the latter do their thing, I’m in the statistical error margin tho

GoW is just so bad at making money. I see the addition of ads as a lifeline to create additional income. There are many players concerned for the games longevity not due to content or player base, rather the inability to get players to spend. Free games depend on those with money (even in “uncertain times”) to spend it. There is very little in GoW worth spending money on.

I’m going to give examples of what I’m talking about. Yesterday I purchased growth pack 2. I instantly received a missing mythic and 1300 gems. I thought this was such a good value that I went to buy it again today. It’s not available. I was planning to buy this multiple times over the course of the next month to acquire all my missing mythics. In my case I would have spent $500 USD.

Another example is that after acquiring the growth pack mythic I was offered the flash upgrade offer. We all know that these upgrade offers are terrible investments, but now they’re trying to entice us by including a single Nysha medal. 1 Nysha medal doesn’t help me. I need 6 to upgrade the troop. If the package included the needed 6 Nysha medals I would have purchased it. To that end I could project 50% of the people that get the new mythic tomorrow would also purchase the upgrade package if it included 6 Nysha medals vs the 1% that will.

This is what I get a for a single explore game. I can do these all day long. Giving me 100g for watching an ad is like giving me 25 cents to mow your lawn.

Because keeping GoW around to continue playing without having to shell out our own cash isn’t enough reward for 1.5 minutes out of the hours most of us spend in the game each day?

Sure, it’d be nice to get more for watching an ad, but let’s be honest:

  • watching an ad is nothing out of our pockets but adds to the game’s revenue so we can keep playing.
  • is time so precious we’re going to fall behind everyone not watching them?
  • no amount of reward is going to make an end gamer happy because we pretty much already have it all
  • ads are OPTIONAL. That means you don’t have to watch them & you’re not losing anything if you don’t (you’re not really gaining anything if you do either accept knowing you’re still contributing without spending your own money). And if you’re not watching them and the devs aren’t getting the revenue they anticipated, then they’ll either bail on the idea, raise the rewards or just leave it as is & take what they can get - none of which really affect any of us one way or the other over where we were pre-update.

I understand disappointment, but the outright rage being displayed is…disturbing and disproportionate.

In my case it isn’t rage so much as disappointment. Supposedly the rewards were supposed to be roughly comparable to what you might earn in PVP. For people at my stage of the game, they are not. If I were a beginning player, they would be, simply because matches take longer and I might have to take more 1-trophy opponents to have a shot at winning the PVP match. But beginning players have another, better, way to support the game: buy gems other products (e.g. Deathknight armor) to help accelerate their advancement.

So I conclude the ads are supposed to be watched by new players, who want to support the game but don’t want to spend their money (yet?) on it. And that’s fine. It’s a great way to monetize a F2P game. But that means the ads are not targeted towards end-gamers, who make up the bulk of the active forums population. So these ads should not be presented as something that end-gamers will find interesting, or relevant. And my recollection is that the ads didn’t have that caveat in the descriptions.

Late edit: it seems the initial thread about these says both “comparable to PVP” and also “nothing special”. I guess I focused on the first one.

Had this not existed.

For 3 weeks prior to the actual implementation. Then I imagine most would just laugh off the super tiny rewards.
Instead…
We were straight up misled. And now most of the reaction that appears to be resentment towards ads is actually human nature to be upset when LIED to. :man_shrugging:

100 gold is no where near 15 seconds of pvp. And that’s what we will get the majority of the time.

Would a flat rate of 3k gold per ad be game breaking?
Hell no.

This is the devs straight up trolling us. Even there 100 maps codes were more lucrative than the ads.
And do any of the companies advertising realize how the game is making us connect negative feelings to something they are paying for?

I doubt Nike would sponsor me to go around kicking folks in the junk while wearing their shoes. = that’s what the current companies are paying GoW for.
