I love to wear a royal outfit a armor set if possible, where we have a cape, and our heroes wear a crown. Please make a royal outfit for men and women. (^_^)
It’s funny how with all the pay to skip (win) stuff they’re putting into the game they overlooked the most obvious and easy way to make money. Before I vowed to not put another dime into this game I would have probably paid for different hairstyles and outfits. There’s all kinds of stuff they could have done with profiles and avatars that they didn’t (and still aren’t).
I’d pay to have a bird avatar
I don’t think they overlooked it. I remember this being brought up by the community several times in the past. The previous community manager Saltypatra addressed it on stream and it was mentioned in follow-up posts. IIRC, Salty said they tried it with avatars and it didn’t make enough money to justify the cost. I think she or another CX person said cosmetics don’t work for a game of this (smaller) scale, or maybe the whales in this game don’t care about cosmetics.
I do think it’s a missed opportunity, at least because there are more options besides avatars. Alternate art for troops would be cool. Card “frames” could also be interesting or other any cosmetics that are very visible during battle.
I can vouch for Salty saying that. Cosmetics for avatars just weren’t profitable. We can see based on current options that they did try out cosmetics, but what Salty said is why I was surprised when cosmetic armor was added to holiday events.
Maybe the whales would spend on alternate art for troops. I’m not sure on the data for this since I’ve never been the type for alternate art. This doesn’t mean I don’t see its appeal or never like alternate art, but it’s often not worth it just for some better visuals.
The right cosmetics will always make a profit. However, you have the consider why the games that have them are successful. I’m not sure Gems of War is that kind of game.
I suspect the main issue was that the avatar they tried it with was some butt-ugly dwarf nobody really wanted, even for free, and it cost $10. Bit like a pizza shop trying to sell you a cow pie, then wondering why demand is so low.
I actually don’t think the dwarf avatar is that ugly, especially once you start adding armor. Honestly, I probably would have bought it or the Lupina avatar at the time I was buying stuff to support the game and raise VIP, but it’s hidden away from in Specials shop. I definitely did not remember it was there…
I also found a thread from 2016 where the devs addressed the reception of the avatar cosmetics . I was around when Salty commented on it, but the original release was well before my time so it’s interesting to read their replies. Here’s one of Sirrian’s:
I wonder if people would pay a dollar to unlock their favorite seasonal skulls for year round use
Then, once they got sick of that initial favorite, another dollar to unlock another one for more variety…repeat
Heck I might even do it and I’m a curmudgeon . Rabbit ear skulls are fun
I actually know people who like the Dwarf. Or the Lapina.
But they should have tried both male and female in one set and then sell it at a more reasonable price.
