just spent all day traiting him out and then realized i had the wrong idea about his last trait, it triggers on spells cast not match 4 xD but i did come up with this so far:

One of the best Gard’s avatar teams is Mercy Alchemist, Hellcat, Gard’s avatar. I’m not sure what you can change for Mercy

(those two are console but u might get more team compositions so i figured to link it as well)
I was having problems with taking skull damage so I swapped Mercy for Sylvanimora (in the last slot, so it won’t block brown). Works pretty well.
