31-8-2019 Server issues?

My apologies on this, I made an uninformed statement based on limited information, my bad!

I don’t think taking the position/perspective of “it’s not our fault” vs “Our customers couldn’t get service” is one i want to fiscally support. so you can keep me as a customer or i can find another game… maybe i expect more because of my age dunno. My loss is the game yours is a paying customer.

If lightning strikes your car and it blows up. Do you blame Ford?
Forgive me, but it’s not just you who’s perception of the issue seems to be off kiltered. But what do folks honestly expect the devs to do?
Ironically enough, if you do quit the game, I imagine you will continue to use Amazon’s services at some point in time. When in all actuality, if you need to blame someone, then your finger should be directed at them.

@awryan are you getting my money? No !

If a Restaurant is unfortunate enough to be in an area with road construction it is not their fault but they need to do what they need to do to keep business… unless you haven’t heard life isn’t fair. Everyday i need to deal with customers, these customers don’t care what is my fault. I have to almost daily be the face of someone else’s error/problem/fault and I deal with it. it is called customer service. Maybe this is not the world you live in, maybe everything is fair in your world. another real world example that comes to mind. When i was doing some IT work for Abercrombie and Fitch, I was told that when someone walks in to buy a pair of jeans, if their size is not on the shelf the customers go elsewhere. The game is a service, it is not a charity or a utopia. If the dev’s can’t handle the real world then they shouldn’t be in it.

The construction will most likely increase business revenue in the long term. Given people are more likely to use great roads than shitty roads.

This should therefore show you how annoying behavior like this can be. And give you a sense of epiphany. Not the complete opposite.

Because they’re complaining about your company or store. Responsibilities that you share by working there. But I doubt anyone complains to you that their cell phone doesn’t get enough 4G service on their phone. Or that the power is out (assuming you have back up generators). Again, your issues are with Amazon… Not Infinity Plus 2 nor even The devil… aka 505 Games.:wink:

Yes. This is correct. Most clothing stores do their best to provide the best selling sizes and are okay with people going else where in search of the sizes that are more rare.
What does any of that have to do with your internet and Gems of War internet working great… But the bridge between it going down?
Since you indicated you are of a certain age.
Say you were trying to call Abercrombie and Fitch to see if they had your Jean size. Your house phone works great. Abercrombie and Fitch’s phone works great. But unfortunately the telephone lines between the 2 of you went down so you have to wait on the telephone company to fix them. You end up having to wait 5 hours before you can reach the store. That being said… Is that an excuse never to shop at Abercrombie and Fitch again?
Furthermore, is not being able to play a video game for 5 hours a reason to never play it again?

@Saltypatra you were right. The game being offline for a few hours every week to perform maintenance is a horrible idea. Consider the 5 hour outage today the test run.

This being said if I’m paying for a service ie internet, a contractor somewhere digs up/ cuts the line it’s not my providers fault. However even though it’s not their fault I’m still paying for a service they cannot provide. My provider would still apologise and offer some sort of discount to compensate for the unforeseen inconvenience, it’s called good customer service.

Another way of looking at it is I’m after a new pair of jeans, I like a particular cut/style, they don’t have my size in stock. The store clerk apologises an offers to call another store to see if they have them in stock. They tell me the other store has them an they can get them to the store within an hr. Due to this lvl of customer service I’d return to the store in the future because they made me feel like a valued customer.

My point is ppl are spending money to play an the devs deserve to get paid for their work. I’m sure the dev team would be seeking some sort of compensation for the disruption, it wouldn’t cost much to send out some chest keys to say thankyou to their loyal players even though the issue wasn’t directly their fault. Ppl were still inconvenienced an lost rewards/battles. It’s more a token of goodwill than compensation. Just my op!

@Kurik777 that quote wasn’t enough blood for you then?
Compensation and responsibility/apologies are vastly 2 different subjects.
It’s hard to apologise when you’ve done nothing wrong. And I have yet to see anywhere, where they say they won’t compensate for the 5 hours the game was down.
I imagine when they get back to work in 12 hours they’ll have a meeting about it. But no one is stopping you from submitting a “missing rewards ticket”.

@awryan if you don’t work for the dev team might I suggest not speaking on their behalf! If you do work for them then my suggestion is leave any announcements for their pr! Playing devils advocate is not helpful in this situation an you’ve cost us a valued member of our guild! I’m assuming you are a player like me so keep to game related talk an leave pr issues for the devs!

You directly commented on my comment. Opening you up to feedback. Basically what you’re saying is I can only say things if it’s bashing the devs or being ignorant to how the world works?
It’s unfortunate that you lost a guild member. But to blame me or the devs is ridiculous. He’s an adult… He makes his own decisions.
Was this Pluq guy your member?

No, all I’m saying is let the devs sort out their pr issues, your comments aren’t helping the situation! I’m not bagging the devs as I think they are doing a great job. I love the game an understand the issues weren’t their fault. It’s up to the dev team how they will deal with the issue so don’t make uninformed comments on their behalf if you don’t have the authority to do so!

Show me where I did this exactly?
You realize this is a community forums right? Where there’s literally guide lines to what I can say and what I can’t say. So I don’t exactly need a peer… To tell me what I’m allowed to say and what I’m not.
I’m not speaking on their behalf by any means.
You could alleg that I’m supporting them.
And that would be correct… because in this case… We can’t blame the devs for what Amazon does.
But good luck with your venture of getting entitlement rewards. :+1:

What is there to deal with? The game went down for a few hours due to something that wasn’t thier fault and they weren’t able to fix but they explained what happened and the game is back again. This whole thing is over now.

If your internet went down or your power went out for 5 hours do you expect the devs to do anything becuase you weren’t able to play?

I was referring to the pr issue, for me personally whether they choose to give anything won’t change my playing habits. It would just be a nice gesture on their behalf is all I’m saying an it’s good pr.

Well, I believe such sort of issues are great opportunity to have some rest. Look at this from this side, guys

We shouldn’t ask developers for the compensation.

Guys, realtalk. I’m going to try not to be condescending, but I’m being deadly serious here. This is a video game. It is a luxury good. That means for healthy people it should be a very low-priority thing that is just one of many things you might do for fun on a given day.

I think most of us, particularly the hardcore players, are not healthy in some way and using the game to deal with that. But you have to understand it doesn’t offer you an availability guarantee, not even if you’re VIP 20. This outage affected Fortnite, an F2P game who most certainly should have the budget to solve the problem if it were solvable. In the end, all they could do was lower the amount of people it affected.

Before you make your really clever hospital analogy, stop. GoW is not a hospital. The functions a hospital serves are far more important to society than a video game’s. So hospitals have to pay for 24/7 staff, and they have to buy their own backup generators, and they have to pay for extra infrastructure to support everything essential they do for situations far beyond the “normal” failures people expect. That costs a ridiculous amount of money but they do it because when the hospital can’t function it’s very likely people will die.

GoW is a video game. It defines gems as not worth money. The legal obligation is to give you gems if you pay dollars, but the terms of their agreement with you are once you have those gems they don’t actually have to deliver anything in particular. The only angle you have to coerce them to compensate you for “the time you lost” is a customer satisfaction angle.

But it costs a lot of money to keep something available in multiple zones. Per hour. Outages like this happen less than once every 12 months. It doesn’t make sense for a luxury app to pay for 8,700+ hours of service to prevent less than 3 hours of outage per year. Or, it doesn’t make sense until it’s as big as Fortnite, who was affected but still available for a lot of players. Fortnite’s paycheck has at least three more zeroes than GoW’s paycheck has. For them the cost was worth it. But they STILL have unhappy customers, even though they paid those costs.

So yes, I applaud you if this experience is making you think twice before buying gems for a particular weekend. You’d probably have a better life if you did something like learning an instrument, playing D&D with some friends, or even learning to juggle flaming bowling pins instead.

I get that for many reasons “find an outside hobby” doesn’t work for people. I really do. When I was a kid none of my friends lived close enough to do things, outside wasn’t very safe, etc. But when I was a kid video games worked without the internet. Video games like that still exist. Stock up on a few, that’s what I did.

I had a fabulous day yesterday while GoW was down. I made plans to have dinner with friends, which is great because I spend all week in an office so it’s nice to get outside and remind myself I have friends. I planned to do some yardwork. I sat down to work on a writing project. Then I took an unexpected trip to the ER and had to change my weekend plans to “stay inside and lose contact with everyone until I get to go back to work on Tuesday”. By the time all that happened, GoW was back and able to serve as my unhealthy distraction from the terrible depression the rest of the day had reminded me about. One of my friends was having a similar rough time, but I wasn’t able to talk to him due to things the rest of the day had created. It really felt good to know he was alone too and I wasn’t able to help! Then GoW reminded me I was behind on trophies so I had to work on that instead of “the faction event”, which is what I wanted to do. I barely had any chance of finishing as-is, but now thanks to new errands it’s probably not even worth trying to get to half the rewards. So it’s not like I don’t have room to gripe here, but I’m just pleased as punch that I already have 3 alternate hobbies for when GoW is depressing me as much as the rest of my life.

So do like me and have some side hobbies. It really helps you deal with the frustration of “my single distraction from the misery of my life is not working”. Having two distractions is really clutch. In the end if you’ve only got one game on your phone to play that’s your fault, or at least you should find one dumb enough to give you a service contract that guarantees compensation for downtime.

The entitlement is overwhelming. Are you all also demanding that Reddit give you free months of Gold to apologize for the fact that Amazon broke some of their infrastructure?

Connectivity to websites and services will sometimes go down. Sometimes it’ll just be for a small neighborhood; sometimes it’ll be for millions of people. You’re probably not going to see any compensation for any of those events, from either the responsible parties or the impacted customers.

Hey I just wanted to come in and let you all know that it appears these issues were fixed after several hours.

You can find a list of just SOME of the other services affected here:
https://downdetector.com/archive/?fbclid=IwAR1kC-OBLBMtQra0ebqws_6SEMQYRud7sSddZeoDBkBl61EZW7JOncVauZ4

It includes Fortnite, the Playstation Network, Paypal, US Bank, Xbox Live, Youtube, Reddit and Twitter.

If we could do anything at all on our end to solve this faster we would have, there’s no benefit to us of depriving you of playing our game. I’m sure all the companies I listed above also would have done more if they could have as well.

Several of our developers were out of bed at 2am on Sunday morning shortly after the issues started occurring despite not being able to do a single thing about the issue, and Salty has very kindly been jumping onto all our communication channels to let everyone know what is happening.

Thank you to everyone who posted here to let everyone know what was happening during the issue.

Especially THANK YOU to @Saltypatra for providing as much information as she could on a Sunday after already putting in so much extra time and effort the past week.

If anyone wants more information or a handy link to share with guild mates here’s the article Cyrup wrote about the issues:

AS i stated above, i dotn agree with the way it was handled… i have stopped paying and playing.

Hey, I’m sorry you feel that way @pluq and wish you all the best in the future.

To everyone staying we will be sending a gift out even though these issues weren’t our fault because, as Gems of Wars players and gamers in general ourselves, we know how frustrating going through this sort of issue is.
