Sorry in advance for the craziness. I have been bingeing the original X Files series lately. That said…

This is going to sound weird, but I don’t think you currently lose PVP points for a defense loss. I’ve watched my losses counter go from 30-ish to 55, and I haven’t lost a single PVP point. I think you lose points for defense wins – I have only two defense victories, and also only two lines in my log show me losing points.

So, once again, it may be more effective to set weak defense teams.

I think – and have said elsewhere – that the game is subtracting PVP points when your defense team wins. Look at those same three players you mentioned, all with similar win counts and points. The lower level player has radically more defense wins than the two 1000+ players. If I am right, then they would have subtracted off a lot of points from his/her total, and that same number of wins should be hundreds of points higher.
