Upcoming troop Deathcap

@jeto I noticed the mushroom character featured as the upcoming Deathcap troop isn’t a deathcap mushroom at all, it’s an Amanita muscaria, which doesn’t kill.

I think this disinformation, though likely unintended, is potentially dangerous and could even lead to fatal consequences, if someone were to fail to recognise a real deathcap as a result of this artwork, and think it was okay.

It also spreads disinformation about Amanita muscaria, as it doesn’t have a 20% chance to kill, but rather a 0% chance to kill (there are zero recorded instances of anyone dying from ingesting A. muscaria), so the troop lore would be wrong.

I know there was a big deathcap murder case in Australia recently, so all the more reason to get the artwork right, as it’s very unlikely to go unnoticed as incorrect.

I personally don’t think the troop looks like fly agaric (Amanita muscaria)

I would also hope no one is looking towards a match 3 fantasy game for realism and mycology facts, and would do real research before taking a wander in the woods.

Would be similar to looking at Merlantis (an ocean city) and seeing the troop Axolotl and moving your pet from fresh to salt water :sweat_smile:

Gems of War in the end is a fantasy game, that takes inspiration from things across the world but they are never conveyed as fact.

This is so wild to me. Am I the only one who was told as a child never under any circumstances to eat a wild mushroom, ever?

Also, even if someone saw a random mushroom and somehow decided, “hey, this isn’t a deathcap" (because I saw it in a video game), that still doesn’t mean it’s not one of the other 700 toxic/poisonous ones. Just because it’s not a deathcap, specifically, doesn’t mean it’s safe.

Wander in the woods? When there’s beasts like Kerberos and Wulfgarok prowling around? Good thing I’m playing a match 3 fantasy game, I’d never have been aware of all the dangers lurking outside. :smirking_face:

Thanks for replying jeto, even if it’s not what I wanted to hear. I guess as a mycologist I’m more bothered about mushroom identity than most. The first thing you do as a forager is learn the ones that might kill you, but as you say, hopefully no one will be relying on this incorrect gems artwork as their only source.

As the old saying goes, all mushrooms are edible, but some of them only once!
