Tried to tell my team about the NEW troop in the Forge!

How utterly ludicrous !

Has this been mentioned before on the forum.
Is it safe to craft.
Or a mistake it’s in the forge.

I crafted one this morning.
The devs post calls him Maelstrom but the name on the card is Maelstorm.
A new troop - he went in to the Forge for the first time after reset today.

Just weird how, they never mentioned a soulforge update.
O well. IV crafted now.
Looks soooo good. Potion gems my fave

Can I ask Jeto to ask the Devs.

To highlight a racial slur on blacks, that hasn’t been used since the 70s.
Is that really a good idea.

The outcome is younger people don’t know why Dago is banned, then look it up.
They can then use it on young black kids, that also don’t know it.

I actually think, highlighting a dead racial term, has a really bad chance of making it come back.

I’m 51, so only just remember it, mostly from old American films, pre 70s.

In my 30’s (and not american) and I’d never heard the term. I would have had to look it up, if I hadn’t seen here what it was. Not gonna use it, but I agree with your point that this risks bringing it back.
The censorship should really be smarter, like censoring the word if it has a space before and after, or something, so it won’t censor the troop name. Or if they can’t do that, they should have used a different name for the troop. This is stupid.

I had heard of the term but in the UK Dago is a contemptuous term used to refer to a person of Italian or sometimes Spanish origin or descent.

I doubt anyone has used it since the eighties

My point exactly, it was racist in the 80s and before.

So why bring it to the attention of people that didn’t know.

That’s just weird.

It’s like there using an 80s filter for bad words.

Irrespective of the meaning and relevance surely the point if they create a troop with that name then the troop name shouldn’t be censored

My two cents, for what it’s worth.

Malestrom Dago’Nath was announced in the weekly update post Crushing It – Gems of War. So, I doubt there is any risk in crafting it and seeing it being reversed.

As for the name, the second part of the name is a Sanskrit word. I also note no specific intent for the name, as a whole, to be derogatory and neither Spain nor Italy are canon in this game. Therefore, I would chalk this up to harmless error by the developers.

The reason why the censorship stands - if I remember from the last time this topic came up - is largely because of consistency with Nintendo Switch (again, if I recall correctly), in which the statement needs taking to Nintendo.

Beyond that, there’s more outdated slurs that also accidentally get tripped. My knowledge outside of NSO is unfortunately limited, so if a staff member wants to confirm or deny that, please do.

If they have to fix it, then they have to fix it. As someone who DOES have Italian ancestry, I see this as a non-issue. Not only that, but this is an issue that could have been raised at any point in the previous campaign quest that, at worst, shares the same name issue.

I’ll let that be my last word on the topic and let the powers that be decide if the name has to change or not.

“Dago’Nath is inspired by the Elder God from the Cthulhu mythos - Dagon.” From the team
And Maelstrom, which means a powerful whirlpool. Spelt incorrectly in-game

The point is, that Dago or Dagoe was a racial slur 40 years ago.
And if we put Dago in game chat, it blocks out.
So the name of the troop, is filtered as a swear word.
That’s what OP is saying.

So either troop name, or the really old swear word filter.
Needs updating

Ps. The Troop is awesome, great spell.
Thank you.

Currently investigating if the troop name itself can bypass the sensor while also leaving the word itself blocked.

Just to be clear, we would never intentionally create an offensive troop name. I have shared feedback with the team to consider.

If anyone has any further concerns specifically about this troop’s name, don’t hesitate to reach out in a ticket and I will do what I can to get a more detailed reply back to you.

The age of a word should not take away from it possibly still being offensive or offending someone. Plenty of people who play Gems of War who are old enough to have seen it be used in a negative way.

True, also getting a dev time to make the change with everything else going on.. is another thing

Can you provide feedback that this shouldn’t have reached this stage? People already pointed this out during the campaign, regarding the mythic.
When they’re making new troops, maybe they could run the game info (troop name, spell name, spell text, etc) through the same filter as chat uses, and see if anything triggers a problem. Or at least ensure they update the filter to ignore any troop names like this as soon as it gets raised.
I get having a filter to remove offensive terms, but it feels pretty dumb for it to flag a troop name. Thanks.

Thank you for the explanation of the inspiration of the troop’s name. I can see how that would have fit with the overall theme of the campaign.

If the name itself is being filtered out because it inadvertently contains a slur, then I can see a justification for making the fix a higher priority.
