What you were expecting to happen, and what actually happened:
I just checked if I have some troops to upgrade - and was very surprised, that there shows up a bunch which i had upgraded “years” before.
How often does this happen? When did it begin happening?

Sort Troops by “upgradable”
IIRC, none of these troops were released “years” ago. “Past few months” is a closer ballpark.
You just happen to now have enough copies to ascend to the next rarity.
I also observed this just this morning – a surprising number of troops that, yes, I do have enough copies to ascend, but which previously were not being shown as “Ascendable”.
And in my case this DOES include troops that have been released for years … I wasn’t exactly paying close attention to which Troops, but we’re talking things like Apophosis, First Mate Axelubber, Glaycion, Sunweaver…
I haven’t opened a huge batch of chests or anything between the update hitting, so I suspect a bug like the Immortal troops (incorrectly) showing at the top of the list was actually obscuring the correct Troops that should have been shown there instead, i.e. until your # of Upgradeable troops > # Immortal Troops, certain Troops that are, in fact, upgradeable were not being listed as such (or possibly at all?) .
But it’s kind of moot now with it being fixed.
I forgot to mention that I checked yesterday the upgradable troops - and didn’t open any chests while sleeping :))

Usually I have only the Immortals and the weekly troops to upgrade, that’s why I was so surprised
Oh dang, same thing happened to me. As @Stratelier said, the filter must’ve been broken all this time and we never realized. Glad it’s fixed now!
Yeah, usually when I do a mass batch of chests I find maybe just 1-2 Troops that just hit their quota for next Ascension (which I do immediately), so to suddenly have about twelve Troops able to ascend was quite the surprise! (By coincidence, I have about 12 Immortals who would not sort properly prior to update.)
