One of the lesser talked about 4.8 changes: troop types

One of the things I love seeing the most in patch notes is when they add/change troop roles. In 4.8, they updated Crazed Troll to Elemental/ Giant. This is an important change because it allows for more troop synergy with team bonuses, so I’m glad they keep things like this on their radar. That said, there are quite a few troops in the game that I feel need their type updated as well.

(Side note, one of my favorite troop type combinations is the beast and X, where the beast is something they are riding, like with Sir Quentin Hadley, Griff Stonefeather, Turtle Cannon, etc.)

First, let me talk a little bit about troop roles. The way I see it, there are two different categories for troop roles. There is the “race” and then the profession. Now, there are plenty of instances where there are weird combinations of both of these, but generally speaking you won’t find two professions mixed. There are vastly more races than professions though. The professions I would generally list as Knights, Rogues, Mystics, and sometimes Construct. Everything else is a Race (although sometimes a Construct is simply a Construct, but sometimes it’s a race too, like Dark Monolith is a Daemon Construct, but Gargoyle is just a Construct, even though they look almost identical).

There are also some races that can be very easily mixed, and others that can’t. It would be very difficult to have a Raksha Tauros or a Centaur Merfolk for instance, but it’s very easy to have things be Daemon, Monsters, Elementals, etc.

I think it’s perfectly okay for a lot of things to have just a race too. For instance, some humans are just humans, like Moneylender. Some beasts are just beasts, like Armored Boar. Sometimes Elementals should just be Elementals, and sometimes Elemental should also be a Profession.

It’s kind of funny that Red Charlotte (Rogue) and Ahrimas (Mystic) got released how they did. They are the ONLY troops in the game that have a single “profession” troop type, when it’s very clear that they are Human.

I’m Necroing my old thread because Enraged Kurandara just came out and it’s troop type is DAEMON / BOSS. Makes sense! But why isn’t Zuul’goth a Monster / Boss?

“Boss” isn’t really a troop type at all. It’s just a description of power.

Why a Monster / Boss though? I thought he was a Daemon all along (also being from Karakoth and having tentacles, multiple limbs and all)

Cuz he looks like a monster ;-D

But his description suggests he might one of Elder Gods… so why not Divine/Boss ?

Other than that i realy like that some troops are just “Dwarf” or “Undead” or “Knight”.

Not sure if i want most of troops to be mixed types… especialy anything below Epic, should stay as it is…

He would look like even more of a monster when people would pair him with a Dervish Hero so he starts with half mana…

In general I think you are probably adding Monster, Beast, Knight, and Mystic to a lot of troops that don’t really need it. Of course once they established that most Knights, Rogues, and Mystics shared a second (race) troop type, it doesn’t make sense to leave that off just a few. So I’m with you about Ahrimas and Red Charlotte.

I also very much disagree with adding Construct to pretty much all of the Mechs. Mechs and Constructs are two different things in my mind, one being a machine created by science and the other being a magical/supernatural creation that has been brought to life somehow (golems).

These two though, have always bothered me. It seems like they inherently need to be the second type too…
