I had as daily quest to play an invasion in underworld (hope these are the right words. i play in german). While this, I had to enter something in my calendar. then, I closed my calendar app and wanted to proceed game. accidently, it happened some times today,
time I could return to main invasion screen, where I wanted to choose the next room, but all last 3 rooms were gray. “get reward” was available, but i couldn’t proceed this invasion.
time app restarted. Again i had to restart invasion.
time luckily I could proceed
Don’t ask me, what exactly I did, if I was in a battle or not or which way I used to choose the app again. it’s just annoying something like that happens just after a short interruption.
It happened again when I get a phone call today. I was in a PvP battle and after I answered the call I wanted to resume battle while talking, App restarted.
I play on a Motorola Edge 50 neo with Android 15.
Gems takes up a lot of resources, so when another app needs some (eg phone call), android will shut down gems so the other app can run.
Gems gets more resource hungry with every update. I have to restart the game after each game mode as otherwise it’ll crash. I’m not looking forward to the update waiting in the wings as performance on my android will likely be worse yet.
@redtoadstool
Could be, but couldn’t be the only explanation. This phone is new. On my old phone (Xiaomi Poco F3 with Android 13) something like that never happened. Maybe it have to do with how the edge manage RAM. If it clears the RAM too fast every background app will get close, even if it’s actually active. With the most apps it’s okay, because they save all changes automatically. But it’s a problem if you want to proceed a running game. And it doesn’t explain why I couldn’t proceed my invasion (1. time) because I couldn’t access another room.
As some new phones don’t exactly have new hardware in them either, but need as much information as possible - as @redtoadstool explained, this is commonly what happens, as the device can’t run GOW and other background apps.
I already told , my new one is a Motorola edge 50 neo with Android 15 and 12GB+4GB RAM. No updates available yet. motorola edge 50 neo (XT2409-1), to be exactly.
My old one I never had problems with interruptions was Xiaomi Poco F3 with Android 13.
I was in a battle when I were interrupted by a visitor. I put down my phone with active screen. When I came back screen was black.
I minimized game to show my visitor a picture. When she was gone I choose GW by select former task (square button).
@Fourdottwoone That’s an explanation, thanks, but I didn’t loose, actually, because I wanted to proceed this one battle. It’s annoying game thinks I loose just because a short interruption.
I suspect your phone restarted Gems of War, which causes any ongoing battle to count as a loss. There’s really no way around handling it like this, otherwise just about everybody in danger of losing a battle would experience spontaneous connectivity issues.
There’s a workaround on Android to force it to not close the game. You go to the screen where you can scroll through your open apps, tap on the app icon, and select “keep open”. But that also means that it will never be closed if you leave it running in the background until you turn that option off - it will eat through your remaining battery very quickly.
As far as I know, this is not strictly related to how GoW itself works, it’s more of an issue with Android assigning resources to apps running at the same time.
it’s an idea for short time. e. g. if I want to play an hour and wanna make sure nothing goes wrong . I just have to remind to skip “keep open” after playing.
Following this up further, it does appear to be more like a device setting issue rather than a bug with GOW closing out when in the background.
As in, if your device have settings specific to completely closing something when not in the foreground being used, we aren’t able to implement something to get around that.
(Much like @Dwuemka mentions)
Whereas if you don’t have any settings like this active, and apps can run in the background and THEN you find only Gems of War is closing out, then let me know please.
@Jeto
I have a similar problem with another, not so big and older app. I thought it would be a compatibility problem in this case. I guess I will try it like Dwuemka said if I want to play for a longer period just in case something unexpected happen. In App Info I just find an option to delete data if you wouldn’t use it for some months, nothing about some moments or if it is in background. I will still search an option like that, I guess. I begin to regret this new phone.
But what you would say about the other problem? If I interrupt a battle for some reason, why the game think I loose it? Why I can’t just proceed the current battle? Wouldn’t it be better to force the continuation? I mean, there is a possibility to give up a battle in options, if you really wanna do that.
I imagine because the game is recognising the app has been completely closed, so all data connecting to the game is severed. If you had a connection still, then it would just sit in the background.
If the game is not running, then there is nowhere for the information to go, so it can’t just leave the battle open.
The setting you are looking for is not specific to Gems of War, it will be in your device settings somewhere. Something like background refresh or leave apps open in background, etc.
The same situation today: Was in a battle in an invasion when I were surprisingly interrupted. BUT this time I had turn on “keep open” (App Sperre) when I began to play. And now I can say it works! I could come back to exact that point I interrupted my battle!
Thanks to all of you and blame to them, who make this so complicated, if it’s Motorola or Android.
Additional: I was so euphoric to write this before, I just close Gems after that battle. But when I restart the app (closed, but keep open still active) I even can proceed my invasion! All rooms still colored! Now I’m relieved! Thanks again!
