Technically he/she is exploring for treasure, so that is indeed experience.

We just discussed a day or two ago that the team plays D&D together. @Sirrian’s gotta be the stingiest DM ever if he doesn’t give the party XP for treasure hunts! “You found 1000 gold and a magic key. You gained 0 XP.”
