[investigating] Game Crashes When Last Enemy Defeated

Platform, device version and operating system:

Xbox Series X

What you were expecting to happen, and what actually happened:
Instead of proceeding to the victory indicator and rewards after defeating the last enemy in battle, the game crashes, treating the battle as a loss, wasting any resources spent on the battle. I just had it happen in an Underspire boss room, losing a lantern (bought with real money) as well as 5 trinkets.

How often does this happen? When did it begin happening?
It’s pretty rare. I play a lot, and have had it happen 4 or 5 times in the last 2 weeks. Two were in Underspire, wasting a torch and a lantern.

Steps to make it happen again
Don’t know. Happens randomly. Every time it’s happened has been when there is only one remaining enemy right after it dies. Last time it happened, the last enemy died to reflect when taking skulls. Don’t know if that was relevant though. I realise hard to reproduce bugs are hard to fix, but it’s pretty serious when limited or paid for resources are being lost.

If it does happen again, on XBOX you can retroactively record so you should be able to capture what happens at the end of the battle. I think it still works even if the game crashes but not 100%

Ideally would handy to know if there is any consistency to what happens before the crash, so if you get more crashing after lethal reflect damage

But it happening in two different game modes makes it more difficult.

No, you have to be in a game to record what just happened.

I have had battles where the last enemy dying from reflect doesn’t crash the game, so that’s probably not the cause. I think it has always happened when there was only one enemy left when it’s defeated.

Ah beans.
Keep me posted with any further occurrences, I’ll see we can test on an XBOX as well in the meantime

This just happened to me in Guild Wars. I defeated a triple Takshaka + Essence of Evil team (common meta for Temple and Apothecary). After I killed the final opponent, instead of going to the victory screen, the game crashed, not counting the win, but using up one of my 5 battles.

I won again on the rematch, but couldn’t do the final battle at the Palace. Obviously this hurts my guild’s chance of winning the day, and left me unable to claim the final rewards (Dracos shiny tokens) without spending money on the medallion and gems to buy them.

It’s unacceptable that important battles and valuable resources can be lost by players in this way through no fault of their own.

Edit: The battle ended with only the enemy hero left alive, with barrier. I killed them with TINA-9000, her first hit removing the barrier, the second killing them, triggering the crash.

Lost a Guild Wars battle to this exact same issue yesterday. Having limited resources or paid items wasted because the game registers a crash as a defeat is beyond frustrating. Really hope support refunds your lantern.

It crashed for me again yesterday after I won a Journey battle, wasting the sigil.

So far I’ve had this happen once in GW, twice in Underspire (one a boss fight) and in Journey. Also a couple of times in battles that weren’t as important (like PvP).

It’s rare, but I think every time it has happened has been when one enemy is left at the time it’s defeated. Obviously it’s happening somewhere in the processing after the last enemy dies and before the victory screen appears. That should narrow it down a bit?

Was it the same thing with the reflect fatal damage? or something else applied to the last enemy?

No, it was probably skull damage. I’m using Wild King.
