What you were expecting to happen, and what actually happened:
Since Friday I see only this. I am on the biggest Russian provider Rostelekom, so I suspect that many Russians right now experience the same.
How often does this happen? When did it begin happening?
Always. For the last four days already.
Steps to make it happen again
Um… Live in Russia and try to play Gems of War?
I’ve been having the same problem since last Friday. It’s not a game block, but rather a problem with Rostelecom’s access to the game servers (high ping). It’s been happening intermittently, not for the first time and not for the first year. The problem can be resolved using a VPN-type program.
Beat me to it. We don’t block any regions from the game, this issue is specific to blockers within your region.
It happens/happened with Puzzle Quest 3 as well.
We also cannot/would not implement a way to bypass regional restrictions either.
Well, the game stopped working after the global AWS server outage on July 24th. Before that, the game worked. After that, the game still doesn’t work for more than 20 players I know.
Again, the issues with AWS is not linked to Gems of War data, so if you are in Russia and only since the AWS outage are having issues, then it’s very likely that AWS updated something within their own systems, which is now causing your regional restrictions to detect you are launching our game and block you.
Again, we have nothing to do with the AWS outage, it doesn’t affect our game data. So any issues you now face since then, is related to AWS and not Gems of War.
Of course it’s not GoW, but Rostelekom. I never expected anything else.
Oh, I didn’t expect any sort of “bypass” too. What I imagined is some negotiations with Rostelekom or Roskomnadzor from GoW side. I doubt the site was blocked willingly, most probably, it was an error from their side, so if you’ll rise an issue, there is a chance that blocking will be removed. But I don’t know, actually.
Wouldn’t it be (more) effective if customers of Rostelekom took this up with Rostelekom directly?
Is there maybe still an active Russian community somewhere, as discord is also problematic for Russina players; maybe on Telegram?
A single complaint might not accomplish much, but if a group complaint can be organised somehow it might get their attention.
If this indeed happened after an outage, it could very well be that one of their network settings is too strict now and it is not an intentional block of the game.
I actually tried to contact Rostelekom, but the best I could get is a robot.
Q: Do other foreign site works?
A1: No, only Russians.
Then you have router misconfigured, check your manual, Rostelekom blocks nothing!
A2: Yes, other ones works.
Then it may be security blocking, you can check the list on Roskomnadzor site, but Rostelekom doesn’t block anything!
It’s a blatant lie, but seems the only answer the Russian customer can get from Russian company. Foreign company could have better results, but on the other hand, maybe not. sigh Well…
I don’t think they are lying.
Network traffic largely depends on automated processes and something might have changed on their end after the outage they had.
There are few things you can try:
Change your router DNS to Cloudflare or Google.
Use a VPN
If you have trouble on WIFI, try if mobile data works.
That’s all I can think of with my limited knowledge.
But by the looks of it connection is timing out, so trying a different DNS might work.
As far as I know, all blocking is semi-automatic, indeed, but it made by each provider, individually. They get the list of sources to block from Roskomnadzor, but it’s up to provider to actually implement this blocking. RKN haven’t any equipment to force blocking, only the watching one. So any blocking is made by provider, regardless of what they say.
I tried to change DNS, but it didn’t work, just as expected - if the final address checked and blocked on the last mile, it not matters which way I am reaching it.
And while I am sure that system-wide VPN will fix the issue, I will not implement it, just because of complexity it will add to everything.
