So I was farming a Delve with a soul grinding team and one of the rooms along the way was the infamous “Scaled Court” (Fangblade, 2x Lamia, Naga Queen). We know this room well: those two Empowered Lamia can single-handedly end your Delve if you get extremely unlucky with the start of the battle.
However … in this case, when the Lamias spellcast, a “No Target Available” message appeared, and my team took no Charm damage.
At all.
I was running this Delve with a Lv.200 Hoard (i.e. all Potion effects active, including Barrier and Blessed). I double-checked my team and this wasn’t just that the Charm damage was blocked (by Barrier), it just wasn’t inflicted to begin with.
So does this mean that when a Troop is Blessed it cannot be targeted by Charm (i.e. it does not inflict damage to its neighbors) ?
Because I’ve literally never seen Lamia’s spellcast fail outright before, but it also appears intentional (and, for Delves specifically, to the player’s advantage).
Interesting. Debates about how charm functions, as a status effect or not, have been around since it was introduced with Lamia and the Love Imp. i.e. impervious blocks mana burn but not charm, invasion towers can be charmed, EoE does not inflict charm. Suggests it is not a status effect. But being blocked by bless suggests that it is.
there was an interesting theory from 2017 that the mechanic might be a 0-duration status effect that immediately cleanses:
Re: submerge, no, it doesn’t avoid all enemies status effects, whether they are applied by a spell or by a trait. Easy to test with Arachnean weaver (web all on spell cast), or Euryali or mother of darkness (poison/bleed on 4 match) vs. aquaticus.
submerge is also historically inconsistent, but in reacting to various different troops dmg, not status effects as far as I know
Charm isn’t a status effect, only those things that stay on the troop with some visual effect are. It’s an instant effect, similar to Devour, which shouldn’t get prevented unless explicitly listed. May need further investigation. As much as I know, the “No Target Available” message only shows up when the Charm target doesn’t have any directly adjacent troops.
