What is the general rule for the boss then?
No general rule for bosses, other than what has already been shared. It is simply luck that you pick the right path the first time among two or more path options. You will begin to get some feel for it over time, which path seems most likely based on what you’ve seen before, but that approach can also totally backfire.
To get all the boss dragons, not stopping for treasure rooms etc, my average since treasure rooms were introduced is 787 gems/week. Low was 600 gems, high was 1050. Lots of variation in number of rooms per week. I use 4 paid lanterns per week and usually 10 extra torches per day.

This week for the first time did not finish on Saturday, I usually spend 150 gems per day to get done on Saturday. This week did not even get 5th boss due to the map and the routes got bigger and lots of intersections and lots of routes.
I don’t know if everyone experienced the same or I am super unlucky with my map.
I didnt bother this week. Faction is boring and gets weak at high levels. Last week at least we had vash and zuul

I haven’t played my Underspire today, but I’m already up to the 6th boss having spent 150 gems x 5 days. My first two torches today will be the 6th boss and Diamantina, so I won’t even be obliged to purchase torches today and tomorrow to finish up.
Mind you, I had one of the boss dragons show up a mere three (3) steps off the main path, so that helped out a little bit. I’ve also had a fair amount of good fortune insofar as finding boss dragons and not wandering down the wrong passages; I believe I’ve only found two (2) sentinel fights thus far and one (1) merchant, so it’s been pretty quick for me to get through this week’s version.
Had a near full clear at 119 this week. Only spots left is the merchant in area 5 for 1-2 more battles, as I already found the 3 sentinels in the area. Would be fantastic, but I have 18 torches left from overbuying the usual amount and not having time to do it until yesterday. (11 + 7 from today)
