Portal gems are very useful in some hard pure faction delves, especially those lacking both skull tank and summon. Hell gate, for example. A level 1 troop on player’s side can still tank a few hits. If enemy team gets it (on 1st slot), it’s even better, as you can ignore skulls till it’s dead.

The daemonic portal gems are another reason why thinking more heavily about quitting the game.
Gems of War is just not as fun to play anymore as it used to be with all the changes that have been done. A game should be enjoyed or be a challenge. Neither currently exist as things lean into luck or cycling to win. Time consuming is not something most gamers like without seeing some kind of reward for it. The daemonic portal gems add to time without really being hard to deal or getting unlucky and lose.
