I think itâs possible she was replying to the line above, which says, âthat wonât cause a panic or anythingâ. In that context, I think it would make sense that saying, âCORONA VIRUS!â in China might cause a panic, but less so in various situations in Australia.
Reading this doesnât give me the impression that she was laughing at people dying from Covid-19. I could break it down linguistically/contextually, but I honestly donât think itâs necessary (Iâm overwhelmingly getting the impression that it might be, though, so let me know if you think it is and are able to consider different possibilities).
Even if this were something scandalous, which I donât think it is, I donât think this would be the best way to bring up and address it.
(I think the best way would be to send in a ticket to express your complaint, discuss it with others privately for other opinions, and/or them privately to explain that it upset you or to seek a better understanding, and if none of that seemed satisfactory and you wanted a better resolution, to then escalate to upper management or, if you really felt it was necessary, the public forum.)

This is why I didnât really want to post it. People defending her incredibly stupid comments. I would have just sent in a ticket, I donât know how to contact management directly and her and Salty take care of tickets. I know it would have been âfiledâ immediately.

I was saying I think itâs possible they were responding to the other line (re: âpanicâ). Global can go quickly, and several messages can pop up before you get the chance to reply. Both of the messages (âwont cause a panicâ and âsomething to laugh aboutâ) were between their responses, so I donât think it was clear. Having watched them respond in Global a bit, I know they often reply to messages in order, so I lean towards the possibility that they were responding to the first message they saw - but if it was worrying me I guess it would be nice to be able to clarify.
Fwiw, I think itâs worth defending, for the sake of having staff members appear in chat and be human, but maybe it would help if there was a clear way they could go ânon-Dev-hatâ and turn off the big, bright, purple name.

Global chat is often fast paced and very confusing, and context in this case is important.
Please be aware that anything said was before the true severity of corona virus was made clear to us. Kafka made these comments on March 4th before social isolation was recommended and the severity of the corona virus became more well known. What the screenshots donât show is how Kafka apologised immediately after @Tabu mentioned that they were uncomfortable. Itâs also worth noting that Australians have a very morbid sense of humor, and a comment along the lines of what Kafka left wouldnât cause panic in an Australia that wasnât yet fully aware of the corona virus consequences.
However, in the light of how the virus has progressed, we are sorry for any concern or panic that was provoked by seeing the statements now. We are sorry if anyone was harmed by them then or now, and will do better in the future.
