It was actually disclosed with the announcement of Journey events generally:

> [@6.0 Update - Into The Rift](https://community.gemsofwar.com/t/6-0-update-into-the-rift/72481/1):
>
> Each path shows you the maximum miles you may earn as well as the level and type of enemies. You may lose some miles under certain conditions:
>
> - Lose 2 miles for each empty allied troop slot at the end of battle
> - Lose 1 mile for each turn past 10 that it takes to win the battle (up to a maximum of 10 miles lost)
> - If you lose a battle, you will be awarded 1 mile for each enemy killed, up to a maximum of 5 miles.

Thus, the guaranteed minimum number of Miles you can earn from a given battle is -16 miles from the stated value.

This scoring system is the fundamental criticism of Journey as an event type, because (1) the Miles do not scale with enemy level but (2) the turns does, resulting in an average of fewer miles per battle at higher cpu levels.
